Design of new hoof block system for lame cows makes fitting easier and improves shoe retention rates
A revolutionary new hoof block system for lame cows has been launched by Dairy Spares. The new Moover system consists of fully biodegradable shoes, of different sizes to improve fit, and which are brightly coloured so that treated cows can be easily monitored. A glue – Moo-Tac – which changes colour when cured, ensures shoes are more easily and reliably fixed, thereby improving retention rates.
Designed and manufactured in the UK, the Moover shoe has a wooden base with a ‘chocolate bar’ tread for a secure grip; it wears down over time, aiding cow comfort. The upper part is made of strong and flexible plastic, ensuring a good fit can be achieved whatever the shape of the claw. The shoe is available in four sizes, each in a bright colour to make it easy to identify and monitor blocked cows.
The gluing and fixing of shoes is a big factor affecting the retention rates of blocking. A common error is to not wait long enough for a glue to cure – especially as this varies with temperature. The Moover system includes Moo-Tac glue, a 2-part glue, which mixes first to brown, and then turns pale pink when it is ready for fixing. Moo-Tac is supplied in a no-mess 400ml cartridge, and is mixed though the tip and applied using a specially designed Mootac gun.
At the Livestock Event held on 8-9 July 2016, the Moover system was runner-up, out of 13 entries, in the RABDF Prince Philip Award, which is given to the most practical, relevant and best presented technical exhibit/demonstration at the show. The Moover System also won Best New Product at AgriScot 2016 in Edinburgh.
