Refractometers should be calibrated before each use with distilled water and be free from any visual dirt and contaminants. Colostrum should be at room temperature for testing.

To assure that only good quality colostrum is fed or stored it is important that it is tested at every collection using a refractometer. An informed decision can then be made as to whether to use it or to discard it.
Colostrum should only be fed or stored if the Brix reading is at least 22%. This indicates an immunoglobulin (i.e. antibodies) concentration of 50mg/ml.
